On one hand, it recognizes the innovative potential of these digital instruments for streamlining transactions. On the other, it observes with concern <strong>how these dollarized tokens drain liquidity from the euro ecosystem.<\/strong> Capital flows are massively shifting toward these assets perceived as more stable and better suited for crypto trading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The phenomenon is particularly pronounced on DeFi platforms where dollar-denominated stablecoins largely dominate. USDT and USDC alone represent <strong>more than 80% of stablecoin trading volumes<\/strong>. This concentration creates structural dependence on the dollar in the digital economy, weakening the euro&#8217;s position in this new financial space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"volatile-spillover-risks-concern-frankfurt\">Volatile Spillover Risks Concern Frankfurt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The ECB now focuses its analysis on <strong>potential contagion effects.<\/strong> Stablecoins are not as stable as they claim to be. The UST-Luna episode in 2022 demonstrated how an algorithmic stablecoin can collapse in just a few days, causing $40 billion in losses. More recently, <strong>USDC&#8217;s temporary depeg in March 2023 following Silicon Valley Bank&#8217;s failure<\/strong> reignited these concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These events no longer remain confined to crypto markets. The growing correlation between stablecoins and traditional financial markets transforms these assets into vectors for transmitting systemic shocks. When a major stablecoin loses its peg, effects spread <strong>instantly to bond and money markets<\/strong> through reserve portfolios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interconnection also intensifies through banking channels. Several European institutions now offer custody and stablecoin issuance services. This direct exposure of banks to crypto risks particularly concerns regulators who <strong>see it as a gateway for a liquidity crisis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-mica-framework-faces-the-test-of-reality\">The MiCA Framework Faces the Test of Reality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Markets in <a href=\"https:\/\/investx.fr\/en\/crypto-investing\/\">Crypto<\/a>-Assets<\/strong> regulation is gradually being implemented, but its effectiveness remains to be proven. <strong>MiCA<\/strong> imposes strict reserve and governance requirements on stablecoin issuers operating in the EU. <strong>Yet major players like Tether and Circle maintain a limited presence on the continent<\/strong>, preferring to serve European users from offshore jurisdictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This avoidance strategy considerably complicates the ECB&#8217;s task. The monetary authority can <strong>hardly control what it does not directly regulate.<\/strong> European traders and institutions freely access dollar-denominated stablecoins via international exchanges, effectively circumventing the European regulatory perimeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ECB is therefore pushing for strengthened international coordination. Without alignment with American and Asian regulators, the European framework risks creating <strong>a simple competitive disadvantage for local players<\/strong>.
