By manipulating the smart contract&#8217;s admin rights, the hacker managed to forge messages and mint 1 billion DOT <a href=\"https:\/\/investx.fr\/en\/learn\/crypto\/bitget-token-bgb\/\">tokens<\/a> (ERC-20 version) out of thin air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Polkadot(<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Polkadot?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Polkadot<\/a>) has been exploited. \ud83d\udea8<br><br>The attacker minted 1B <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24DOT&amp;src=ctag&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$DOT<\/a> and dumped it all in a single transaction for 108.2 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24ETH&amp;src=ctag&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$ETH<\/a>($237K).<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4pStYrGb8y\">https:\/\/t.co\/4pStYrGb8y<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wRplAWNnBg\">pic.twitter.com\/wRplAWNnBg<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Lookonchain (@lookonchain) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lookonchain\/status\/2043558598111048126?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 13, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Immediately following this fraudulent exploit, the hacker liquidated their entire loot in a single transaction. This massive dump allowed them to walk away with <strong>108.2 ETH, worth approximately $237,000<\/strong>. Although the native Polkadot blockchain was not compromised, this exploit highlights the persistent risks associated with cross-chain bridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This incident, while smaller in scale compared to historic hacks like <strong>Ronin<\/strong> ($625M), <strong>Wormhole<\/strong> ($320M), or <strong>Nomad<\/strong> ($190M), illustrates the ongoing issue of message verification flaws within bridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, crypto hacks totaled over $4 billion, including <strong>$2.67 billion<\/strong> from smart contract exploits, with bridges accounting for roughly <strong>50%<\/strong> of laundered funds. Despite this, DeFi losses dropped to $168M in Q1 2026 (an 89% decrease compared to 2025). However, bridges are increasingly being targeted, with approximately <strong>$13.7M stolen<\/strong> in Q1 alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dot-price-in-freefall-is-it-going-to-zero\">DOT price in freefall: Is it going to zero?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The market impact was immediate. Faced with this sudden injection of artificial liquidity, the price of <a href=\"https:\/\/investx.fr\/en\/learn\/crypto\/polkadot\/\">DOT<\/a> suffered a violent <strong>correction<\/strong>. In just a few minutes, the asset <strong>plunged by over 7%<\/strong>, dropping from $1.24 to $1.15, before attempting a slight rebound around the $1.20 mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This sudden <strong>bearish<\/strong> move sent shockwaves across DEXs (decentralized exchanges), where the trading pair narrowly avoided a total crash. Traders are now closely monitoring support levels to see if buyers can spark a <strong>rally<\/strong> or if selling pressure will intensify. While the core of the Polkadot protocol remains intact, investor confidence has taken a severe hit following this forced <strong>retracement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, in terms of <strong>social sentiment<\/strong>, the reaction on X (Twitter) is mixed but largely nuanced: many users are emphasizing the distinction that &#8220;Polkadot was not hacked, the Hyperbridge was,&#8221; which is helping to limit the panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the crypto market digests this news, volatility is likely to remain extreme for DOT. Will whales accumulate at this discounted price in preparation for the next <strong>bull run<\/strong>, or is this the beginning of a deeper plunge?
