Two low-profile governance votes are shaking up the Solana<\/strong> ecosystem this week. Behind the acronyms SIMD-0550<\/strong> and SIMD-0553<\/strong> lies a potentially major overhaul of the network’s monetary policy<\/strong> \u2014 with direct implications for SOL<\/strong> supply over the next six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the SOL<\/strong> price climbs back above $105<\/strong> with a gain of +9% in 24 hours, validators are preparing to vote on mechanisms that could structurally alter the token’s scarcity. The vote runs until epoch 1023, expected at around 3:30 PM UTC on August 27<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not a simple technical adjustment \u2014 it is a bet on scarcity<\/strong> as a long-term value driver, at a time when Solana<\/strong> is looking to consolidate its position against Ethereum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SIMD-0550 and SIMD-0553: What These Proposals Actually Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first proposal, SIMD-0550<\/strong>, aims to double the annual disinflation rate<\/strong>, moving it from -15% to -30%<\/strong>. The result: Solana<\/strong> would reach its terminal inflation rate<\/strong> of 1.5% as early as early 2029<\/strong>, compared to 2032 under the current schedule. According to modelling by 21Shares<\/strong>, this represents approximately 18.9 million SOL not issued<\/strong> over six years \u2014 an estimated saving of between $1.4 and $1.5 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second proposal, SIMD-0553<\/strong>, introduces a burn mechanism<\/strong> on compute-unit fees. It has already cleared the review stage. If activated, daily burns would rise from the current 600\u2013800 SOL<\/strong> to 7,500\u20139,000 SOL<\/strong> based on current network activity \u2014 a more than tenfold increase. This type of mechanic is reminiscent of Ethereum<\/strong>‘s EIP-1559<\/strong>, which transformed ETH<\/strong> into a deflationary asset during periods of high on-chain activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
