Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs just recorded their best week since October 2024, with a massive surge in assets under management. But behind that headline-grabbing figure lies a far more nuanced reality.

Of the $23 billion increase, less than 12% represents genuine net new capital inflows. The rest? A straightforward revaluation of assets already held, driven by rising prices.

This distinction between market performance and actual inflows is critical for accurately assessing institutional appetite for these products.

$23 Billion More in AUM: The Mechanics Behind the Number

Last week, assets under management (AUM) across spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs jumped by $23 billion, marking their strongest weekly performance since late October 2024. At first glance, the signal looks powerful. In reality, you need to break that figure down to understand what it actually means.

Of that $23 billion, only $2.6 billion represents net inflows — meaning fresh capital injected by new investors or by existing investors increasing their exposure. The remaining $20.4 billion came mechanically from the revaluation of positions already held, driven by the price rebound in Bitcoin and Ethereum over the period.

This is a structural phenomenon in asset management: when the price of an asset rises, the total value of the fund increases even without a single new subscription. AUM is therefore a measure of size, not of attractiveness. Net flows, on the other hand, measure the market’s genuine conviction.

$2.6 Billion in Net Flows: Weak Signal or Confirmation of an Institutional Comeback?

The $2.6 billion in net inflows is nonetheless significant. For context: the weeks of negative or near-zero flows seen between January and March 2025 had fueled fears of waning institutional interest. This return to sustained positive net inflows therefore marks a clear shift in tone.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs continue to dominate the landscape by a wide margin, with products such as BlackRock’s IBIT and Fidelity’s FBTC capturing the bulk of incoming flows. Spot Ethereum ETFs, launched in July 2024, continue to grow but remain well behind in terms of both AUM volume and weekly flows. The dynamic between the two assets remains decidedly asymmetric.

What this figure reveals above all is that the institutional market is not yet in aggressive FOMO mode. Allocators are entering gradually and cautiously, testing the resilience of current price levels before deploying larger amounts of capital. This behavior is entirely consistent with a macro environment that remains uncertain, caught between Fed monetary policy and persistent geopolitical tensions.

What ETF Flows Really Tell Us About Market Sentiment

Reading ETF data correctly has become an essential skill for any serious crypto analyst. The confusion between AUM changes and net flows is common and is often exploited to amplify bullish or bearish narratives depending on what the moment calls for.

A $23 billion weekly AUM increase makes for a compelling headline. But $2.6 billion in net flows is the figure that actually matters when assessing whether new capital is structurally entering the crypto ecosystem through regulated products. It is also the number that institutional desks monitor to calibrate their own exposure.

The overall trend remains positive: several consecutive weeks of positive net inflows would constitute a far more robust signal than a single isolated spike. The next weekly publications will be decisive in confirming whether this renewed interest is sustainable or simply opportunistic, tied to a short-term price rebound.
