Massive artificial intelligence spending is unsettling investors and destabilizing equity markets. In this climate of uncertainty, traditional safe haven assets like gold are under the microscope — but Bitcoin is increasingly entering the conversation.

The correlation between BTC and tech indices is beginning to loosen. A signal that institutional players can no longer afford to ignore.

Between 2024 and 2026, the macro setup for Bitcoin against gold could redefine the hierarchy of safe haven assets. Here is why this debate is taking on an entirely new dimension.

AI as a Volatility Catalyst: Markets Are Searching for a Safe Haven

Major tech giants — Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta — have announced AI spending plans that collectively exceed $300 billion for 2025. While these investments fuel long-term enthusiasm, they are also generating immediate pressure on margins and valuations. Equity markets are reacting nervously, and the Nasdaq has absorbed several sessions of intense volatility since the start of the year.

In this context, investors are rotating toward decorrelated assets. Gold has logically benefited from this move, breaking through historic levels above $2,900 per ounce in early 2025. But Bitcoin is telling a different story: following its post-halving ATH, it is consolidating within a wide range while maintaining a bullish market structure on higher timeframes.

The question is no longer whether Bitcoin qualifies as a safe haven asset, but whether its risk/reward profile surpasses that of gold in a cycle where institutional liquidity is accelerating. Inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States — which surpassed $35 billion in assets under management within just a few months — reflect an institutional appetite that has no historical equivalent in the world of the yellow metal.

Bitcoin vs Gold: On-Chain Data Points to a Rebalancing

On the technical side, Bitcoin is displaying a BTC/Gold ratio (the relationship between the price of BTC and the price of gold) that has been trending upward over the long term. Every post-halving cycle has historically produced Bitcoin outperformance relative to gold over a 12 to 18-month window. The April 2024 halving is no exception: the reduction in block rewards to 3.125 BTC per block mechanically compresses the available supply.

On-chain data reinforces this scenario. According to CryptoQuant, Bitcoin reserves on centralized exchanges continue to decline, signaling persistent accumulation by strong hands. At the same time, the MVRV Z-Score — a key indicator of BTC‘s relative valuation — remains in neutral to moderately bullish territory, well below the overheated levels seen in 2021.

Gold, for its part, is benefiting from massive buying by central banks, particularly in China and India. But its liquidity profile remains structurally different: it cannot be transferred in seconds, generates no native yield, and remains difficult to access for retail investors outside of ETFs. Bitcoin, backed by a now mature institutional custody infrastructure, is gradually closing that gap.

The 2024–2026 Cycle: A Historic Window for Bitcoin?

The current macro setup resembles a rare convergence: a Bitcoin halving cycle, a Fed in gradual easing mode, persistent geopolitical tensions, and a sector rotation away from overvalued tech stocks. Each of these factors, taken individually, is favorable to safe haven assets. Together, they create a configuration that Bitcoin has never navigated with this level of institutional maturity.

Analysts at CoinGlass note that long positions on BTC in futures markets remain elevated but not excessive, leaving room for a bullish continuation without the immediate risk of a cascade of liquidations. The average funding rate across major exchanges is hovering around neutral values, a sign that the market is advancing without excessive euphoria.

One major unknown remains: Bitcoin’s correlation with global risk. In the event of a systemic shock — a sharp equity market crash or a liquidity crisis — BTC has historically sold off in the initial phase before rebounding more aggressively. It is precisely this behavior that sets it apart from gold: more volatile in the short term, but potentially far more rewarding over 18 to 24 months. A profile that aligns exactly with what institutional investors with a medium-term investment horizon are looking for.
