Metaplanet offloaded a portion of its Bitcoin holdings in Q3 2026. Not out of necessity, but by design. The Japanese firm wanted to send a clear signal to its creditors and institutional investors.
Behind what appears to be a contradictory move — selling BTC only to buy back more — lies a sophisticated financial mechanism drawn directly from Strategy‘s playbook. And the numbers speak for themselves.
The result: Metaplanet has now cemented its position as the second-largest corporate Bitcoin holder in the world, with 44,000 BTC on its balance sheet.
A Strategic Sale, Not a Capitulation
In Q3 2026, Metaplanet sold 10,000 BTC for approximately $789.2 million, before buying back 11,000 BTC for $948.7 million, at an average acquisition price of $86,246 per bitcoin. The net result: a gain of 1,000 BTC over the period.

The stated objective was never to reduce exposure to BTC, but to concretely demonstrate the group’s solvency. By converting its Bitcoin into cash, Metaplanet proved it could fully cover all of its bond obligations, loans, and interest-bearing debt — a critical condition for accessing new financing instruments such as corporate bonds and preferred shares.
CEO Simon Gerovich summed up the operation plainly on X: “We converted Bitcoin into cash, exceeding the total principal of our bonds and debt. We held that cash, then bought back more Bitcoin than we had sold.” A show of strength, not a sign of weakness.
Metaplanet: The World’s New Bitcoin Treasury Giant
With 44,000 BTC valued at approximately $3.7 billion at current prices, Metaplanet now sits just behind Strategy — the undisputed benchmark for publicly listed Bitcoin treasury companies. The Tokyo-based firm, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, underwent a radical pivot in 2024: abandoning its core hospitality and technology business to pursue a full-time BTC accumulation strategy.
This model — raising capital through debt instruments to purchase Bitcoin — rests on a clear bet: that the structural appreciation of BTC will outpace the cost of debt. With the ongoing crypto market rally, that bet appears to be paying off. Metaplanet’s stock has posted notable gains over the past month, even as it remains in negative territory year-to-date.
Metaplanet’s strategy reflects a broader structural trend: publicly listed companies across Asia are looking to replicate the Strategy model, using their balance sheets as a vehicle for Bitcoin exposure. The Q3 liquidity demonstration was designed precisely to reassure the more conservative Japanese bond markets of the model’s robustness — and to pave the way for new debt issuances to fund further BTC purchases.
