India has temporarily blocked Telegram, affecting 150 million users across the country. The move is officially justified by national exam security concerns — but it conceals a far deeper battle.

Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, is pulling no punches: he is directly accusing Indian telecom giant Reliance of orchestrating interference that extends well beyond India’s borders. An explosive allegation that raises urgent questions about censorship, digital sovereignty, and freedom of access to decentralized platforms.

Behind this ban lies a conflict with major geopolitical and economic ramifications — with Telegram at the center of a standoff between governments, telecom operators, and digital free speech.

A Ban Justified by Exams — But With Blurry Boundaries

Telegram and the TON blockchain

The Indian government ordered a temporary restriction on Telegram in the days leading up to the re-sit of the NEET-UG, the national medical entrance exam, scheduled for June 21. The stated reason: exam paper leaks had been actively circulating in Telegram groups, compromising the integrity of the selection process for hundreds of thousands of students.

This kind of targeted block is not unprecedented in India. Authorities have previously restricted internet access or specific platforms in sensitive contexts — elections, civil unrest, national exams. But the scale of this measure, affecting more than 150 million active users on Indian soil alone, makes it one of the most sweeping ever applied to a messaging app in the country.

What sets this episode apart from previous ones is the immediate and very public response from Pavel Durov, who transformed what could have remained a quiet diplomatic incident into a full-blown international controversy.

Durov vs. Reliance: The International Sabotage Accusation That Changes Everything

Pavel Durov wasted no time hitting back. On his official channels, the founder of Telegram claimed that Reliance Jio — India’s dominant telecom operator, owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani — had interfered with access to Telegram beyond India’s borders. If proven true, this allegation goes far beyond the scope of a simple local government decision.

According to Durov, this was not a technical block limited to Indian territory, but a coordinated action designed to disrupt access to Telegram in other regions — something he describes as “international sabotage.” The rhetoric echoes the tensions Telegram has previously faced with governments such as Russia and Iran, but the direct involvement of a private actor of this scale represents a notable precedent.

Reliance has not yet publicly responded to these accusations. But the context is telling: Reliance Jio is actively developing its own digital and messaging services in India, and a weakened or inaccessible Telegram would mechanically translate into a competitive advantage. The crypto community, which relies heavily on Telegram for project announcements, trading groups, and information channels, is watching this situation very closely — particularly given the potential impact on the TON blockchain, which is closely tied to the Telegram ecosystem.

What Are the Consequences for the Crypto Ecosystem and TON?

For the crypto community, Telegram is far more than a messaging app — it is core infrastructure. Thousands of blockchain projects use Telegram as their primary communication channel, and the TON blockchain (The Open Network), born within the Telegram ecosystem, ranks among the most active networks right now, having recently recorded over one billion transactions.

A prolonged block or degraded access to Telegram in India — one of the fastest-growing crypto markets in the world — could slow TON adoption and reduce liquidity for projects that rely on this user base. Indian developers and traders active on Telegram trading bots or DeFi mini-apps would be directly impacted.

More broadly, this episode highlights a growing structural tension: governments are seeking to control information flows on decentralized or semi-decentralized platforms, while founders like Durov champion a vision of a free, censorship-resistant internet. This battle is only just beginning — and its repercussions on the regulation of crypto and communication platforms could be felt far beyond India.
