Complexity: Ethereum’s New Systemic Risk

In his recent reflection, Vitalik Buterin signals a clear change of direction: Ethereum should no longer try to do everything, but rather focus on long-term sustainability. After years of rapid expansion, the network faces a central problem: technical debt, accumulated through the stacking of features.

An overly complex protocol becomes harder to audit, making it more vulnerable to bugs and attacks. For a network securing hundreds of billions of dollars, this risk is no longer acceptable. The priority now becomes the security and robustness of Layer 1.

Vitalik also highlights a decentralization concern. If running a node becomes too resource-intensive, only a few powerful actors will be able to do so, which would go against Ethereum’s philosophy. Simplifying also means ensuring an open network resistant to censorship.

“The Purge”: Simplify to Strengthen

This vision takes shape in a key phase of the roadmap: The Purge. The goal isn’t to restrict Ethereum, but to remove obsolete elements that unnecessarily burden the protocol, such as certain historical opcodes or the requirement for each node to store the entire history.

By delegating innovation and complexity to Layer 2 solutions (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base), the mainnet can become simpler, more stable, and closer to an “ossified” protocol, similar to Bitcoin. This approach prioritizes reliability over the race for features.

Long term, this “less is more” strategy is perceived as highly bullish. It strengthens Ethereum’s appeal to institutional investors, facilitates the onboarding of new validators, and prepares the network for mass adoption without sacrificing security. The question remains whether this simplification will be enough to propel ETH to a new ATH in the next bull cycle.
