Ethereum, Between BitTorrent and Linux: A Vision of Global Infrastructure
In a message published on January 8, Vitalik Buterin compared Ethereum to BitTorrent, highlighting that a decentralized network can operate at very large scale without central control. Like BitTorrent for file sharing, Ethereum aims for massive scalability while preserving its distributed nature.
To achieve this goal, the network relies on Layer 2 and rollups, which absorb the majority of transactions while inheriting the security of the mainnet. This architecture reduces congestion and gas fees, while paving the way for an ecosystem capable of processing volumes comparable to traditional systems.
Buterin also draws a parallel with Linux, a symbol of massive but invisible adoption. Ethereum does not seek to be used directly by everyone, but to become an infrastructure layer powering mainstream applications, notably through account abstraction and simplified interfaces.
Technical Roadmap and Implications for the Crypto Ecosystem
The Ethereum roadmap is structured around several key phases. The Surge, already underway with proto-danksharding, aims to multiply transaction throughput and drastically reduce costs on Layer 2. The following stages target staking centralization, MEV, node lightening, and protocol simplification.
On the market front, ETH is evolving in a consolidation phase after the late 2024 rally. Investors are closely monitoring major technical levels, while regulatory developments and increased integration of staking into financial products could serve as a catalyst in the medium term.
More broadly, this vision marks a maturation of the crypto sector. Ethereum is positioning itself as a long-term technological standard, comparable to the fundamental protocols of the Internet. For developers as well as investors, the challenge is no longer immediate speculation, but a progressive, sustainable, and structural adoption of blockchain as global infrastructure.
