Why we shouldn’t expect an XRP explosion like in 2017

In 2017, XRP delivered remarkable gains, making it one of the market's top performers. However, with increased competition, Bitcoin's continued dominance, and a complex regulatory landscape, the question remains: can we still expect a historic rally?

End of Euphoria for XRP Holders?

Although XRP has recently rebounded, its ratio compared to Bitcoin remains nearly 90% below its peak of 2017. Increased competition in the cross-border payment space now makes it difficult for the token to experience another surge.

The 2017 surge also benefited from a more favorable competitive environment, as XRP was one of the oldest cryptocurrencies at that time. Today, it must contend with numerous rivals such as Ethereum, Solana, or Sui, as well as stablecoins that are increasingly dominant in cross-border payments.

In this context, it will be much more difficult for bulls to replicate the five-digit vertical gains recorded 8 years ago. The conditions of the crypto market have fundamentally evolved since then, making a scenario similar to 2017 unlikely.

XRP Still Struggling Against Bitcoin

In 2017, the XRP surge in dollar terms was also accompanied by considerable gains against Bitcoin. The XRP/BTC ratio climbed by more than 3,700% to reach over 0.00023 BTC within a year.

Today, the situation is different. While the XRP/BTC ratio has rebounded to around 0.000025 BTC in September 2025, after falling to less than 0.000010 BTC in mid-year, it still remains approximately 90% below its 2017 peak.

The cryptocurrency is also facing resistance in a long-term distribution zone between 0.000025 and 0.000030 BTC. Rebound attempts have already failed multiple times between 2019 and 2022.

Caution Is Required

Although XRP has recently regained ground, market signals indicate that long-term investors are now more skeptical than enthusiastic about continued price appreciation. The competitive landscape has also significantly strengthened since 2017, weakening the prospects for spectacular gains for the cryptocurrency.

In this context, betting on a repeat of XRP’s exceptional 2017 performance could prove extremely risky in 2025. Investors would therefore be well advised to exercise the utmost caution before venturing into this territory.
