Blockchain : ZachXBT’s Weapon for Recovering Stolen Funds

A major cyberattack recently targeted the Central Bank of Brazil services. Hackers managed to intercept between $140 and $180 million belonging to six major financial institutions. Of these funds, approximately $40 million were converted into cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT. They were subsequently laundered through local exchanges and over-the-counter trading platforms.

Tracking these crypto assets proved to be a genuine detective mission for investigators. Blockchain expert ZachXBT collaborated with Brazilian authorities. He had to manually analyze suspicious transaction volumes on local marketplaces to identify the wallets involved. Despite these challenges, he managed to trace approximately $30-40 million of the stolen funds and freeze nearly $5 million. He cooperated with reputable platforms including Binance, Bitso, Bybit, and Tether.

Lack of Coordination Between Exchanges and Authorities

However, ZachXBT didn’t hesitate to criticize the lack of involvement from certain key players, particularly Circle. He accused the latter of showing disinterest in fighting digital crime. “Circle’s leadership doesn’t really care about the industry,” he lamented. This case highlights the importance of close collaboration between various stakeholders to effectively combat cyberattacks targeting the financial sector.

Following this massive breach, Brazilian authorities arrested a 48-year-old employee suspected of selling his access credentials to the hackers for approximately $2,700. They are also pursuing four other individuals allegedly involved in this large-scale theft. In total, law enforcement has managed to freeze approximately $50 million of the diverted funds.

This case once again highlights the growing challenges posed by cyberattacks in the financial domain. It underscores the necessity for market participants to strengthen their cooperation and traceability capabilities to effectively counter criminal activities on the web. The mobilization of experts like ZachXBT, who combine technical expertise with authority collaboration, proves crucial for securing the crypto ecosystem.
