Treasury Bonds on Ethereum : a Revolution in Progress

Fidelity is following a growing trend among financial institutions venturing into blockchain for the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA). The American market for tokenized Treasury bonds has seen close to a 500% growth over a year, reaching $4.77 billion. And the company is now looking for Ethereum !

BlackRock leads this movement with its BUIDL fund, managing $1.5 billion in assets. On the other hand, Franklin Templeton‘s tokenized fund reaches $689 million.

Why Asset Tokenization ?

Asset tokenization like Treasury bonds facilitates faster settlements, 24/7 trading, and less reliance on intermediaries. Some skeptics have critiqued the feasibility of tokenizing certain assets. Nevertheless, large institutions are increasingly adopting blockchain-based financial instruments.

The SEC filing hints at the possibility of peer-to-peer exchanges in the future, further enhancing accessibility. The regulatory uncertainty that once deterred institutions from entering this sector has been dispelled by the success of BlackRock and changes in US policy. Visa, Mastercard, and JPMorgan have all launched blockchain initiatives, showing increased confidence in the future of tokenization.

While tokenization brings benefits in terms of efficiency and liquidity, some criticize that certain assets, like real estate and private equity, do not fit well on the blockchain. However, the Boston Consulting Group estimates that tokenized fund assets could reach $600 billion by 2030. Currently, they are worth $2 billion.

Fidelity’s entry into this space reflects the adoption of blockchain technology by the traditional finance industry. Their Bitcoin and Eth ETFs are already highly successful. Furthermore, their foray into tokenized Treasury bonds could further catalyze the mass adoption of digital assets. Given this context, is it the right time to invest in Ethereum? You can do so in a few steps on Weex!
