A Discounted Geopolitical “Hack”: What Happened?

The case has sent shockwaves through Israel. Raz Cohen, a technician who served in the command unit of the famous missile defense system between 2019 and 2022, was approached in December 2025 by an Iranian agent on Telegram. Within a month, the young man transmitted 27 photos and videos detailing the firing processes, as well as the exact GPS coordinates of the Iron Dome batteries located at the Hatzerim and Palmachim bases.

To pay for this massive data leak, Iranian espionage did not need suitcases full of cash. A simple transfer of around $1,000 in cryptocurrencies was enough. This on-chain transaction, likely carried out via stablecoins or privacy coins to cover their tracks, illustrates the ease with which P2P (peer-to-peer) payments can bypass traditional banking radars. A real wake-up call for national security, proving that a negligible budget can compromise critical infrastructure.

This case is a reminder of the dark side of decentralization in crypto. Israeli authorities, notably the Shin Bet and the Lahav 433 unit, conducted a complex joint investigation to trace the digital trail. Cohen’s arrest took place on March 1, the day after the launch of Operation Roaring Lion against Iran.

The Telegram Trap and the Escalation of Blackmail

The lure of easy money quickly turned into a nightmare for the young reservist. After receiving his first crypto payments, Cohen tried to cut ties with his handler in February 2026. But the immutable nature of digital exchanges and psychological pressure took over. The Iranian agent threatened to expose him publicly by using a photo of his own sister on a fake Telegram profile, forcing Cohen to delete the app in a panic.

Ultimately, this shows how social networks and unhosted wallets facilitate the recruitment of vulnerable targets. Unlike a breakout on a trading chart, Cohen’s reckless escalation hit the wall of justice. Indicted for aiding the enemy in wartime, he now faces life imprisonment or even the death penalty, an extremely rare punishment in Israel.

Local media, including The Times of Israel and Ynet News, report that dozens of Israelis have been targeted by similar recruitment attempts over the past two years. Enemy intelligence services exploit the speed of crypto transactions to secure the loyalty of their sources before they even realize the gravity of their actions. This is a major issue for counterintelligence agencies facing this new threat.

Has Crypto Become the Secret Weapon of Global Espionage?

The Raz Cohen case marks a decisive turning point. Governments worldwide are watching this trend with concern, aware that blockchain technology offers immediate and cross-border liquidity to malicious actors.

Faced with this growing threat, regulators could demand increased transparency from exchanges and tighten KYC (Know Your Customer) rules. However, the very nature of decentralized finance (DeFi) makes total control almost impossible. Intelligence agencies will inevitably have to arm themselves with new on-chain analysis tools to track these illicit microtransactions before they fund the next data leak.
