Ripple’s RLUSD Faces the Competition: A Battle of Giants
The stablecoin market represents nearly $200 billion in total market capitalization. Tether (USDT) reigns supreme with approximately $140 billion, followed by Circle’s USDC, which exceeds $50 billion. Ripple is therefore entering an ultra-competitive arena where trust and institutional adoption are paramount. Merrick emphasized that RLUSD does not seek to replace these players but to offer an optimized alternative for Ripple’s specific use cases.
Traders are closely watching this launch. Liquidity remains the lifeblood of any serious stablecoin. Without sufficient volume on major trading platforms, maintaining the peg becomes a perilous exercise. Ripple promises integration on major exchanges from full deployment, with substantial liquidity pools to absorb fluctuations. This strategy echoes that deployed by PayPal with its PYUSD, although results remain mixed with only $600 million in market cap.
The regulatory dimension constitutes another pillar of the strategy. After years of legal battles with the SEC, Ripple knows that compliance is non-negotiable. RLUSD benefits from a clear regulatory framework in several jurisdictions, a major asset for convincing cautious institutional players. Merrick confirmed that the company is actively working with regulators to anticipate future stablecoin legislation, particularly in the United States and the European Union.
The XRP Ecosystem as a Launchpad
The integration of RLUSD into the XRP ecosystem represents Ripple’s real trump card. The XRP Ledger already processes millions of daily transactions with 3 to 5 second finality and fees below $0.01. These technical performances provide an ideal infrastructure for a payments-oriented stablecoin. Developers will be able to use RLUSD in decentralized applications built on the XRPL, thus creating synergies between the native XRP token and the stablecoin.
This approach could stimulate XRP adoption itself. Market makers and institutions using RippleNet for international transfers will now have an in-house stablecoin, eliminating dependence on competing solutions. XRP’s daily volume hovers around $2 billion according to CoinMarketCap. If a significant fraction of this volume flows through RLUSD/XRP pairs, liquidity will build naturally.
