On June 30, OpenAI began what appears to be a week-long break to allow its teams to recover after exhausting work hours and growing internal pressure. While no official confirmation has been given, internal communications suggest these tensions are exacerbated by the massive recruitment of researchers by Meta.
First, Mark Zuckerberg personally hired four senior OpenAI executives to join his superintelligence laboratory. Subsequently, Research Director Mark Chen addressed a blunt message to his colleagues. “I have a visceral feeling right now, as if someone broke into our home and stole something,” he wrote.
Facing this talent hemorrhage, OpenAI has had to revise its compensation policies and redouble efforts to retain its top researchers. But the scale of poaching orchestrated by Meta, involving Zuckerberg himself, seems to have seriously disrupted OpenAI’s ambitions regarding superintelligence.

Beyond models, OpenAI and Meta are investing massively in their respective infrastructures to secure their long-term advantages. While Meta acquires 49% of data labeling company Scale AI, OpenAI is developing a $60 billion data center in Texas.
