A Spot Zcash ETF: Grayscale’s Unexpected Masterstroke?
Asset management giant Grayscale has no intention of stopping at Bitcoin and Ethereum. On May 8, 2026, the firm officially filed an S-3 form with the US SEC to convert its Zcash Trust (ZCSH), which holds over $200 million in assets, into a fully fledged spot ETF listed on the NYSE Arca.
This announcement took the market by surprise. If approved, this filing will give rise to the very first ETF backed by a privacy focused cryptocurrency. Institutional investors would thus be able to gain direct exposure to ZEC without having to manage the technical complexities associated with the custody of these crypto assets.
Grayscale’s timing is far from coincidental. Earlier this year, the SEC quietly concluded its lengthy investigation into the Zcash Foundation without pressing charges. This removal of regulatory risk has paved a golden path for institutional products, wiping out years of bearish sentiment surrounding the project.
ZEC: Whales Accumulate En Masse
However, the market’s reaction did not quite match the magnitude of the announcement. In the wake of this news, the price of Zcash displayed high volatility and compression below its POC at $570, hitting a low around $540.
But this overall bullish movement is not solely driven by retail investors. Institutional capital is already positioning itself strongly. Tushar Jain, cofounder of Multicoin Capital, recently revealed that his fund has been heavily accumulating ZEC since February, viewing it as an essential macroeconomic hedge against growing financial surveillance.
Despite this impressive rally, significant challenges remain. Approximately 30% of the circulating supply of Zcash sits in private pools (shielded pools), which complicates the proof of reserves audits required by regulators. Institutional custodians like Coinbase Custody will need to prove that their infrastructure is flawless.
How High Can the Price of Zcash (ZEC) Go After This Breakout?
The approval of such a financial product would mark a decisive turning point for the entire crypto sector. If the SEC validates this ETF, it could trigger an unprecedented bull run for privacy coins, legitimizing their place in traditional finance. Zcash could then target new highs and potentially edge closer to its historical ATH.
However, the ball is now in the court of US regulators, who are known for their caution regarding anonymization technologies. The issue of compliance and fund traceability will be at the heart of the debates in the coming months.

From a technical standpoint, the Fibonacci retracement indicates a potential return to the $430 to $360 zone before initiating a new bullish leg in the long term. In the short term, the long cluster at $500 has a high probability of being swept. Nevertheless, the rise of ZEC could still reach between $700 and $900 this year if the $500 level is maintained as support on the weekly close. In addition to hitting the top of its weekly FBB, the RSI is approaching overbought territory.
In other words, the momentum is definitely there and all the ingredients are present for a long term rally. But caution remains essential in the coming weeks as volatility is likely to intensify.
As whales continue to accumulate in the shadows, a burning question arises for traders: is this the ideal time to position oneself on ZEC before the SEC’s final verdict, or should we expect a deeper retracement?
